Our Commitment to Accessibility

Our mission and accessibility
Our mission is to transform the landscape of youth mental health care delivery by equipping school staff with the training and resources they need to provide evidence-based and culturally responsible programming to their students. In order to expand TRAILS’s impact, we aim to be inclusive of everyone, including individuals with disabilities. By removing barriers across all parts of the TRAILS digital experience, we can better support educators, caregivers, and students alike.

Our accessibility journey and conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) (opens in a new window) are rules to make the web easier to use for all. The TRAILS website partly meets the requirements of WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which means that some parts of the website still need work to meet these requirements. Moving forward, we are working to strengthen accessibility procedures at TRAILS to ensure all accessibility-related requirements are met.

Web accessibility
In 2024, TRAILS completed a thorough accessibility check on the website trailstowellness.org (opens in a new window) in order to make the TRAILS experience easier to use. We set an accessibility standard and checked the website manually as well as using tools such as Google Lighthouse, axe DevTools, Stark, and WebAIM’s WAVE tool.

Our website partly meets the accessibility standard WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Some gaps we need to fix include missing information at certain screen sizes, buttons that may be too small for some screen sizes, and some non-text content missing the proper labels in the code.

Our website does well in other areas, such as using colors with enough contrast, providing information in multiple ways and locations, and working as expected when navigating with screen readers. Accessibility is supported by the use of HTML, WAI-ARIA, CSS, and JavaScript technologies on web browsers.

Materials and print accessibility
We design program materials so that users can use them online or print them. Materials follow a standardized template with clear structure, layout, and typography. TRAILS materials partly adhere to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We will begin a thorough accessibility check to meet more guidelines relating to document structure, text content and color, images and graphics, embedded links and document navigation, and interactive elements.

Trainings accessibility
Partners are introduced to TRAILS program materials through live virtual trainings on Zoom. Zoom offers accessibility tools like live captioning, transcripts, screen reader support, and adjustable settings. For pre-recorded sessions, we provide captions and transcripts. Upon request, we work with interpreters and translators. As we grow, we are exploring other platforms to improve training registration and access.

Language accessibility
TRAILS is working to expand our offerings to be inclusive of more language and cultural backgrounds. We will begin by offering student- and caregiver-facing content in Spanish first and other languages as we grow.

External resources
TRAILS partners access program materials on Vimeo and the Google Suite through trailstowellness.org (opens in a new window). It is important to note that we do not control accessibility on external websites and apps. However, if these external websites have any accessibility issues, we welcome your feedback to evaluate other options and improve our website.

Feedback
TRAILS values inclusion and welcomes your feedback on the accessibility of our virtual trainings, digital materials, or our website. Please fill out our Accessibility Feedback form (opens in a new window).
